ladies who lunch and tour
In July 1999 a group of ladies met at the Society’s clubrooms to discuss the need for a Ladies Group. It was decided that the main objective was to Foster friendship amongst the ladies of the community through regular afternoon teas with guest speakers at the Society and to have the occasional bus trip.
From then on the ladies have enjoyed a variety of occasions. These are usually conducted on the last Sunday of the month, although Club commitments have meant that this is not always the case.
Gatherings
The Afternoon Teas are most popular and the Ladies bring along goodies made with pride for all to enjoy.
Guest speakers have been many and varied: Winnie Groom, Real Estate; Dianne and Christina Jelas, Family Tree; Helen Sumich, Lawyer; Marilyn Savage(Pivac); Bowler, Manchester Commonwealth Games; Dorothy Jelicich, Member for Parliament; Nicolette Samios, ex soldier NZ Army, Anzac address; Nellie Vella, toastmistresses,to name a few.
Entertainment afternoons with Line dancers, Belly dancers and visits to the movies, notably “Calendar Girls”.
Bus trips have included: River Mill, Waimauku; Auckland Museum; Clevedon and Formosa Golf Course; Warkworth; Crystal Mountain; Pauanui; Ngatea; Coromandel; Silverdale; Helensville; Waiheke Island the many gardens and places of historical significance we have visited. Thanks especially goes to Marica Nola and Tilly Yelavich for opening up their properties for afternoon tea on one of our bus trips out West Auckland.
These have included the Annual Bingo Afternoon in August.
Fundraising
As well as the occasions for the ladies, it was decided that they would undertake from time to time a fund-raising cause and these of late have been well attended and supported by the general membership. The most notable of these have been the raising of money for the new deck’s outdoor furniture, The Starship Hospital Foundation and Breast Cancer Foundation. Everybody throws themselves whole-heartedly into the venture and there is much delight and pride when a good total is raised.
The Ladies Committee plans to continue to organise many more outings and guest speakers in the future.
So ladies do come along and take part in our afternoon gatherings at the club and also come along on one of the bus trips.
