Since the 1860s, Dalmatian families from the Adriatic coast of Croatia have been coming to New Zealand in search of a better life. By 1940, their thriving community in central Auckland, with over 700 residents, became a bustling cultural hub for not only the Dalmatians but also for those in South and West Auckland, and even Northland. On Victoria, Wellesley, Nelson, Hobson, and Queen streets, Dalmatian-run businesses like fish shops, cafes, and general stores created a vibrant local atmosphere, while two cultural clubs on Hobson Street became gathering spots for music, dance, games, and community bonding.
